Wildlife Gardening

About Me

Hello, my name is Claire and I live in Newcastle upon Tyne. I am passionate about caring for wildlife and I enjoy educating children about the environment.

I grew up in a rural area of County Durham and enjoyed all the wonders of the countryside and wildlife. In my early twenties I moved to a more urban area of Newcastle and found that many of my neighbors’s children had not experienced as much I had as a young child. I wanted to help improve this and worked hard on getting onto my Countryside Management degree at Newcastle University.

This experience was a real eye opener and I learnt some very valuable skills about caring for our local environment. The contacts I gained were invaluable for getting further working experience.

Work History

My work experience includes:
• Northumberland Wildlife Trust working as an' Education/Wildplay Assistant’.
• Benwell Nature park run by Newcastle City Council
• Northumberland County Council as a 'Site and Information Assistant' for   Plessey Woods Country Park.
• Natural Community Garden, working with the children in the local deprived   area and teach them new things about the environment.

As for now... I am working with schools and how they can pick up funding to develop their wildlife gardens, sensory gardens or veggie plots. It’s very exciting and rewarding to know I am making a huge difference in their school life.

I also work with the National Trust (Gibside). It’s a good role as I get to work with people of all ages. Many of the visitors to the site vary from regular retired walkers to Brownie and Scout groups.

Tynemouth Market

I have sold many environmental and wildlife products at Tynemouth market. These included bird food, bird feeders and garden tools. It was good to know I helped people to improve the lives of their local wildlife. Offering specialist wildlife products to the public at reasonable prices.

I love to help and educate people on how to make their local environments namely gardens more wildlife friendly.

I also offer a loyalty card system for those regular shoppers on my stall and in return they get freebies!!! I can give you tips and tricks of the trade to encourage more visitors to your plot.

Voluntary Work.............................

I have taken part in various voluntary roles within the environment sector. These ranged from a 'volunteer ranger' within Newcastle City Council to an 'Events assistant' with the RSPB. I also was a member of the universities 'Conservation society' visiting local YHA hostels and working with BTCV (British Trust of Conservation Volunteers. I am also a volunteer Scout Assistant for my local scout group and am a member of the 'Learning through Landscapes' network.
